My Favorite John Wayne Movies

It is hard to limit it to just five...but after much debating here are my top five favorites.

McLintock - Producer's Edition
McLintock - Producer's Edition
McLintock is my all time favorite John Wayne movie. It has a special meaning for me because it is the movie my husband and I watched on our first date over 46 years ago. Since that time I have watched it numerous times. In fact, my husband and I often say the lines before the actors. We love watching McLintock. The movie has such wonderful chemistry between John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara who are constantly bickering in this film. It also has a classic fight scene the clay slide that everyone seems to get into. I love it when the Indian standing at the top of the muddy hill watching the fight says to John Wayne "great party but no wiskey, we go now!" In addition to John Wayne this movie has a list of stars that include Patrick Wayne, Stephanie Powers, and Jerry Van Dyke. If you are looking for romance and comedy set in a western town, I highly recommend McLintock.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon [DVD]
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon [DVD]
This movie is part of a cavalry trilogy where John Wayne plays Capt. Nathan Brittles. This western also shows a tender side of John Wayne when he fights his tears as he is receiving his retirement watch from his men.

The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
The Quiet Man is my second favorite John Wayne film. This one is somewhat different than many of his western and war films. It is set in Ireland where John Wayne is cast as a retired boxer who has left America to return to his homestead. This film is a romance and the chemistry again between John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara is fantastic. It is complete with a fight scene that even has a break in it for a beer. This romantic comedy is a delightful movie that I have watched many times.

Rio Bravo (1959)
Rio Bravo (1959)
I love old movies that are packed with stars and Rio Bravo certainly is packed with them. In addition to John Wayne you will find Walter Brennan, Angie Dickenson, Rick Nelson and Dean Martin. A fun western where you see that John Wayne can break out of his "tough-guy" image. He has some very funny scenes with John Wayne and Walter Brennan.

True Grit (Special Collector's Edition)
True Grit (Special Collector's Edition)
In this movie John Wayne plays a cranky old U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn, who helps a very gutsy and determined young girl to find her father's murderer. This movie won John Wayne an Oscar for leading actor. Wayne plays Rooster Cogburn in another movie, entitled Rooster Cogburn. In this movie he costars with Kathryn Hepburn. It is also a movie I enjoyed even though I didn't pick it for my top 5.

John Wayne played in more than 70 low budget films before he became a star in Stagecoach in 1939.

Jay Silverheels(Tonto from the Lone Ranger) was hung in True Grit.
